In addition to this application, you will be asked to provide the following documents:

  • A copy of your most recent IRS tax return to verify your low‑income eligibility. TRIO SSS follows federal guidelines to determine whether a student is considered dependent or independent.

  1. If you are an independent student, you must bring a copy of your own most recent IRS tax return.
  2. If you are a dependent student, you must bring a copy of your parents’ most recent IRS tax return.

You are generally considered a dependent student if you are under 24 years old and do not meet any federal criteria for independent status.

You are generally considered an independent student if you meet at least one of the following:

  • You are 24 years of age or older
  • You are married
  • You have dependents you support
  • You are a veteran or active‑duty military
  • You were in foster care, a ward of the court, or an emancipated minor
  • You are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness

If you are unsure whether you are considered dependent or independent, TRIO SSS staff can help you determine which tax return you need to bring.

TRIO SSS cannot accept emailed tax documents or print documents from your phone. You will be able to upload a PDF copy of your tax return in the Income section of the application, or you may bring a printed hard copy to your interview appointment.

  • An unofficial transcript from any colleges you have attended other than WVC

  • If this is your first or second quarter in college, an unofficial copy of your high school transcript

  • A photocopy of your permanent resident card (if applicable)

Eligible students will be invited to a 30‑minute intake interview.
